I believe there is something of the kind, that the price of electricity just matches the highest production price, since you cannot differentiate which electricity comes from where in a grid. Si even if you have cheap renewable/nuclear energy, costs may rise if you have to use ‘traditionnal’ power plants. Im not sure of the details, i just heard the mechanism being explained once or twice.

My main language is french, and yet i prefer the type-name order. Maybe its because i first learned C, but i guess its also because it goes from general to particular, whereas name-type feels like going backward (being detailed with name, then vague with type, then more detailed with value assignment). Anyway, i guess you’re right, it’s probably not a lot about language.

Some simple patterns code can be very quick to do, and not much different from a slide up, while still keeping most people out.

many reasons, already told by others, but the one that made me jump was that it does not install apps without me telling it to.

I know i’m fully nitpicking in bad faith here, but which are the countries not doing evil shit ? There probably are a few that are mostly good, but even those are quite rare, aren’t they ?

I care, thanks for sharing i’ll check that when i need to install windows game in the future !

Tbf, my experience with Gog achievements has been quite bad even with paid games played via Galaxy. While most worked, some achievements triggered silently, some on the following game start, and some straight up didn’t work. Maybe it was a problem on the game side, but anyway if some games have bad Gog achievements, maybe it’s less worth it to get those working.

Currently, it only supports Goldberg Steam Emulator, as other emulators may use different achievement formats.
Very nice option, thx for sharing, but isn’t it limited to Steam games?

As others said, there are some good GUI if the command line is a bit too hard for you as it was for me. I use Parabolic and so far it’s working like a charm (i only do officials video sites though, don’t know for streaming services)

Thanks for the tip, i had to try it out because i didn’t knew that. It seems in this case the -9 option does the same as default (delete the AntiMicroX process but not the AppRun one). I also tried with killall and its -g option to include all processes in the same group, but they probably are not in a common group since it behaved the same. Anyway, TIL about these options so thank you !

Yup, very clever, I think this will avoid any problem with other potential AppImage processes. Thank you very much <3
For more details : this AppRun.wrapped process is mounted in a partially randomized folder each time, something like /tmp/.mount_AntiMiXXXXXX/AppRun.wrapped, where the Xs are a bunch of random characters. So using pkill with regex can both include all versions this full command line can take, while excluding processes created by other apps (which, I suppose , won’t have ‘AntiMi’ in their folder name) : pkill -f /tmp/.mount_AntiMi.*/AppRun.wrapped
I have no deep knowledge of this, but i guess there is a difference between sponsoring and owning. A lot of big FOSS projects have indeed corporate donations, but i think for the most part corporate cannot force them to do things (the only exception i know of being the deal between Mozilla and Google). Of course, they can threaten to cut fundings, but i think it isnt a real problem (for now) for various reasons : linux ecosystem is still niche enough to be uninteresting for big corpos, donations help projects get better quicker but you can always fork them and come back to more humble progression if needed (not 100% sure, im not very tech literate, but that’s a feeling i get), and i guess FOSS ecosystem also provides big corpos with talented people and occasionally interesting pieces of software, so they have a bit of interest in keeping it alive.
If you want to go towards the least corporate options, you can try the most niche linux options. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, made by the enterprise Canonical, which has a somewhat bad reputation in the linux corporation, for being a bit too centralized i guess ? I use it as it is perfect for a not skilled user like me, but if you want to be independant of tech companies, maybe that’s not the perfect choice.

Shameless copy/paste of the main info if anyone wants to catch a glimpse without going to reddit :
Summary of events:
On 5 March 2026, a Wikimedia Foundation employee accidentally imported a malicious script to his account on Meta-Wiki while testing global API limits for user scripts (see his global.js page history). The malicious script was created in 2023 to attack two Russian-language alternative wiki projects, Wikireality and Cyclopedia. In 2024, user Ololoshka562 created a page on the Russian Wikipedia containing the script used in these attacks. The script, which had been sitting dormant on ruwiki for 1.5 years, then spread to several accounts on Meta, including WMFOffice, and mass-deleted pages in namespaces 0–3, leaving behind an edit summary of “Закрываем проект”, Russian for “Closing the project”. The staff member, as a global interface administrator, has permission to edit meta:MediaWiki:Common.js, which allowed the script to infect any user who visited Meta-Wiki while it was active. To prevent the script from spreading further, all Wikimedia projects were set to read-only for about 2 hours, and all user JavaScript was temporarily disabled.
Post from WMF staff member on Discord:
Hey all - as some of you have seen, we (WMF) were doing a security review of the behavior of user scripts, and unintentionally activated one that turned out to be malicious. That is what caused the page deletions you saw on the Meta log, which are getting cleaned up. We have no reason to believe any third-party entity was actively attacking us today, or that any permanent damage occurred or any breach of personal information.
We were doing this security review as part of an effort to limit the risks of exactly this kind of attack. The irony of us triggering this script while doing so is not lost on us, and we are sorry about the disruption. But the risks in this system are real. We are going to continue working on security protections for user scripts – in close consultation with the community, of course – to make this sort of thing much harder to happen in the future.

In the same sense, there recently was a disclosure of footages of this kind of camera during a massive protest in france, with thousands on each side. It was very violent, with two protesters into coma if i’m right. Turns out, police forces were told beforehand to “record to prove we’ve done nothing wrong”. The result is hours of footages of insults, illegal use of their gear, call to use lethal weapons, and pleasure of sending people to hospital, because those morons forgot to turn the cameras off when those happened.

+1. I ragequit windows when it reinstalled Teams during an OS update, just after i uninstalled it.

Interesting numbers for people who dont wanna read :

My experience with ZorinOS has been quite smooth. Though i have opened the terminal for advanced customization and problems with my hardware (nvidia gpu and weird disks configuration), i think there’s good chances you don’t need it. Although im not very tech savy and i’ve heard people say that it’s not a very good option because they’re based on stable but quite old versions of Linux, so i’m just putting the option out here, not saying it’s the best

Perfectly ! Switched to Zorin for my gf laptop who couldn’t handle Windows anymore, decided to do it on my main PC as well and now am trying to revive an old mini-pc with the Lite version. Everything is fine, except for a short list of games (with anticheat like Vanguard or thing like this).
Well as you pointed out the GNOME philosophy of keeping everything dead simple can be interesting there. Their mail client apps are Evolution and Geary, the last one seeming to be the simplest one.
