Linux@lemmy.ml•Should there be something that installs Linux to disk directly from Windows?
2·15 days agoThis might not be feasible. IDK how you could install a whole OS, inside of another, without looking like a serious virus or malware. There are many files that cannot be changed while Windows is running (why it needs to reboot so often for updates). And no sane OS is going to let a program edit things like the MBR.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tor Project received $2.5M from the US government to bolster privacyEnglish
113·1 month agoThe TOR project in it’s entirety was created by the CIA for secure communications. It’s public because no matter how secure, if only spies use TOR, then it would be easy to catch them.
I don’t mean to imply that TOR is insecure, it’s open source and the Government has an interest that it be secure. But if you’re going to annoy the US government, you better have good opsec because they understand TOR better than anyone.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How is there not a ubiquitous modding platform for Linux yet?
9·1 month agoWhy is Linux different than Microsoft? Most of the games I play aren’t “Linux” games, but the identical Windows software running through a compatibility layer on Linux.
The Steam client on Linux has the same “workshop” tab for adding mods. It’s not in every game, but that’s true on Windows too.
That keyboard looks really nice, but the placement of the R CTRL would cause me fits.

10·3 months agoThe oldest praying automaton we know of is from the 16th Century. This is basically that but with more capitalism.
I can’t help but notice how captured the Christian mind is, when even the return of the Savior is a business opportunity; a revenue stream. These people are already robots who can’t worship without a prospectus and a spread sheet.

I had to switch to Linux because it wasn’t presented with any option besides Microsoft when I learned how to computer.

Linux can be intimidating. And there is going to be a learning curve. Especially if you’re the kind of windows user who’s familiar with gpedit and has custom .bat files.
But what get’s left out is the joy and satisfaction that comes with learning how to Linux. I just re-installed my OS a week ago, and I was able to recognize and resolve dependency and permissions issues without having to look anything up. I also finally learned and started using rsync for backups over SSH/SAMBA. I know it’s not much, but it made me feel like a real hackerman.
The only thing I learned in my last few years of Windows was how to disable features that annoyed me.
