He was repeat exec who arguably should have known better. He also was closer to the actual lab operations and the functional execution of fraudulent activities.

If she had more money she would’ve stayed out of jail.
Could be that he was less of a sympathetic figure due to his ostentatious and flashy spending habits, and… she’s a woman.
