Several countries are already ahead of Brussels. In 2025, a Paris court ordered five major VPNs to block more than 200 illegal sports streaming sites, while Italy moved to extend its Piracy Shield system to VPN and DNS providers.

In Spain, a Córdoba court ordered NordVPN and Proton VPN to block IP addresses tied to illegal LaLiga streams in February.

The same court later refused to fine NordVPN for not complying. LaLiga has since asked the Commission to add NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark to its piracy watch list.

Piracy will soon become the only way to consume a lot of content without verifying your identity. The internet is being destroyed in a multi-pronged approach

Big note that might be missed in the text that contextualizes how fucked up what La Liga in Spain is doing is. A judge gave a court order to ISPs to follow through when La Liga tells them to ban IPs without following through, this VPN thing is there to catch people trying to circumvent the ban. The issue is that several streaming sites use cloud flare, so La Liga made ISPs ban half the fucking internet because they just banned half of cloud flare.

It’s so bad that there’s a web called hayahora.futbol to check if it’s this shit when your fav forum, some Lemmy instances, several wikis, radarr and mo much other stuff start giving timeouts.

I don’t see football, I already took issue with the fucking fans blocking the entry to the hospital in my city when there is a match, I really hate the concept since they took half the internet…

When they began the ban, I discovered I was banned out of the RAE website and many other completely unrelated websites. All because of a sport. On the plus side, I managed to convince many friends of the importance of using a good VPN.

Another issue is that later anyone with access to AI creates their own, make it open source and the cycle continues 🤔

Maybe the VPN/ISP/Home companies should rebrand as LLM/AI companies, then copyright won’t even exist anymore. Problem solved.

So they’re asking VPN companies to start doing deep packet inspection? As if people won’t start using Russian grade obfuscation techniques…

Funny, the article mentions nothing about the recent Quad9 case.

Problem is, VPNs can enforce DNS - by blocking any secure (DoH/DoT) methods, forcing the device to fall back to regular insecure DNS, which has to go through the VPN tunnel, where the traffic can be intercepted and forced through their own DNS service.
