Yes, I’m going to use it as a couch console, web browser player for MLB games, and a streaming machine. I did a bunch of reading after posting my last comment and decided that I’ll just stick with Arch. Fedora sounds alluring for the simplicity, but I think I’ll miss the AUR and the rolling release cycle too much. I finally pulled the trigger this afternoon and bought the components after looking at them in my cart on Newegg for a week straight. It should be a pretty rad system
That’s great to hear. I’d miss the AUR, but I think I’ll just try Fedora out for this build. I want to play with the computer, not tinker with the OS.
I gave up and went back to x11. The final straw was when system settings stopped opening, and I couldn’t figure out why.
Have you any experience with HDR in Fedora? I’m getting ready to build a HTPC and I’m torn between fucking with Arch for everything, but getting bleeding edge support, or trying Fedora for the first time for easier system management. Since it’s an entertainment system, I’m not sure if I want to mess with all the Arch config requirements. But I do want solid HDR support.
Nvidia drivers on Arch, KDE Plasma 6.
I have a Aoris 3070 ti and it has been problematic with Arch KDE Plasma. I never had issues with Pop and Gnome. So I’ve been thinking about getting an AMD card too, but I bought this 3070 ti at the height of the GPU shortage and spent $1000 for the stupid thing. Idk what to do with it, because I’ll definitely never get anywhere close to that kind of money for the thing.

I haven’t experienced this with a Pixel nor an iPhone. I buy straight from Google and Apple though, because I don’t want the bloatware that carriers install. Did you buy from the carrier? Is it a Samsung? They do all kinds of crappy things with their TouchUI.
Ha! Thanks for sharing that. I got a real laugh out of it. It starts off pretty tame and just gets worse and worse until it’s completely unusable. As a former blogger, I’m very familiar with some of the shit that money driven bloggers pulled. I always avoided anything other than non-intrusive ads and still made a living off of it, which really goes to show that usually the webmaster is just an asshole.
Saying that it’s better than FOSS programs isn’t saying much. Software built over 40 years by a trillion dollar company is better than free stuff built by volunteers in their free time? Well that’s not surprising. What is surprising is how awful Microsoft software is considering the resources they’ve thrown at it. It’s not good software. But, no company is going to invest the resources in a competing suite of programs because of the market dominance that Microsoft has. That very same dominance is why they’re fine with releasing things that are just good enough, rather than actually good.
But look at programs where Microsoft wasn’t thoroughly entrenched already. Software like Zoom or Slack is a billion times better than Teams. Teams is the worst piece of shit I’ve ever used. We switched to it a few months ago and it has negatively impacted everyone’s productivity and collaboration. Everyone that has to use it hates it. But C suites make the decisions about what we use, not the people who actually use it, so we’re stuck with this garbage for who knows how long.

It’s fine now, but getting CUPS installed, configured, and getting proper drivers for your printer used to be incredibly difficult, especially if you were new to Linux and didn’t know how to do any of that stuff.

You have me curious again after hearing you’ve tried everything. Maybe I’ll give it a whirl. It’s not like I can’t switch to Arch later. It’ll be just as much of a pain in the ass later as it will sooner, and I just might find a new favorite OS. LOL. Plus, I do dig Gnome, and I think it’s probably a better DE for a HTPC than KDE.
