Back in my day it was Lynx 2012 / apocalypse / whatever it was called saying that was the last Lynx they’d ever make. To my annoyance, it turns out they were lying. Although I don’t tend to hang out with the sort of people that blast themselves with Lynx so I guess it makes no difference either way

Large-language models and computer tools in general are different to traditional machines, to be fair. For every spinning Jenny that you make, you need people to make it, people to service it, and people to operate it. These people all have jobs now. For every piece of software you make, you only need the one team who originally develops it. From then, it can be replicated endlessly with no extra human input. You also only need one set of people to “service” it (bug fixes, updates etc.) for the entire world, rather than one per factory or workplace

(Also, I disagree with your premise and your assumption that jobs = good, but you probably don’t want to hear about it and I don’t want to type an essay :) )

Without meaning to be rude, you’ve not been paying attention. Throughout the history of capitalism, rich arseholes and then corporations have done as much as they can to avoid paying people for labour. It shouldn’t be surprising that this latest tool is used the same way

I’m actually going to disagree there. Where I live there is a monthly magazine delivered free to anyone who wants it. The magazine is 100% adverts and is paid for entirely by the people advertising. It’s very useful when you’re trying to find a plumber of sell a car or whatever.

EDIT: But you were probably being hyperbolic and I will agree that I dislike to see adverts anywhere that I’m not actively searchibg them out

Petrol / diesel vehicles usually have a longer range than electric… as long as they are topped up.

But to answer your real question, I also wonder what the point of the article is. It seems like the point is to dissuade people from buying EVs and to keep oil companies making as much money as possible. Since we are talking about hypotheticals (she might still buy EV if her family has a petrol car to borrow), why not discuss the hypothetical of a bus / train / car share network that makes a personal vehicle irrelevant?

Edit: maybe I’m just being too cynical but why would someone who’s so passionate about the environment to buy an EV and talk to a reporter about it and her environmental impact miss out a chance to push systematic change? Maybe she’s taken out of context, maybe the whole thing is made up maybe I’m just not understanding enough of other people’s viewpoints
