Writing code was never more than 20% of what I do as a programmer. All those other things are where I have always spent me time, and those are the hard part.

Not what you are asking for, but maybe what you want: https://invidious.io/ is a youtube front end with some features that might or might not make it what you want.

That is an example of the system not working. That they are doing this implies that maybe the system has been fixed. It is hard to know.
Even hand coded projects need more than 6 months before I’ll replace anything in my stacks. Too many projects start with great intention but then the founder gets bored (life gets in the way?) and they go unmaintained. Really I’m looking for projects that enough developers have got involved in that I can be confident it won’t go stagnant. I could be one of those developers, but I don’t have enough time to contribute to all the different projects I use (I barely have time to contribute to the one project I maintain)

The system is working: nobody is perfect, but we have redundancy in place to detect problems and fix them latter.
The real dangerous systems are the ones where problems are covered up and ignored. You will get a false impression that they are safe until it is too late.

Probably more expensive than AliBaba. Which might or might not mean better quality.

That is unfortunately expensive as time goes on. Parts have a markup, even third party. Unless there are a lot of others maintaining the same model parts will go out of production. You beet buy a lathe and milling machine.

I know more than one place that uses monitors for safety messages. If they overlay that there will be bug court cases. Likely criminal

I saw rants very much like yours 30 years ago - before you first masters…
A masters has always to my knowledge been one additional year after you have a 4 year degree. So that they only require 1 year for the second degree is expected - you already have a 4 year degree, a masters is one additional year of advance study on top of it.

While someone can, in practice that doesn’t happen in most cases

What is the practical difference between code not accepted and code hidden?

The source is available but not in a form that will be accepted upstream. Often for good reason, but that doesn’t do you any good.

Those are not exceptions.

You are very shrilly yourself. Plenty of companies have shown it isn’t hard to take GPL without contributed back. There are high odds you are using a chrome based browser to read this - did you know that is a GPL project because once upon a time it was khtml (from the KDE project), but the changes were never contributed back. Many embedded companies have their own fork of linux as well - their changes are all available as the GPL requires, but the changes won’t be accepted to the kernel as is and so the fact that they are available is useless.
Meanwhile there are many companies using FreeBSD who choose to contribute their changes back, just like some companies choose to contribute back to various GPL projects they use.

Don’t trust it until lawyers have had months to examine the exact wording. Loopholes are to easy to hide. Often a other wise good bill will have something awful in it such that you must oppose the whole

Only last year? I’ve been avoiding them for a long time. You can almost always find a “thing.com” store that sells just the thing I need and the blurb is written by someone independent who knows the subject and can tell me why or why not it is worth spending money on the more expensive version.

See a qualified forester for the specific area. There are many different forests and they have different needs so no universal statement can be made.
Most of the forests in north America need regular fires and have been harmed by centuries of white men putting them out. However that means centuries of overgrowth and so starting one now is a too hot fire that isn’t helpful either. The great plains need to burn yearly as well.
A proper fire should leave lots of charcoal behind that gets beat into the soil and naturally permanently sequesters tons of carbon. So this is a factor in global warming.
The problem is a few people have money for lawyers and anytime an expert proposes a fire they get a judge to issue an injunction and stop it until it is too late to safely burn. I’m not sure what to do about this but it is something to oppose.

Which is why I’m careful. That is why I always reject the “no payments or interest for 6 months” offers stores sometimes have - I “know” they won’t remind me to pay it off in 6 months and then I’m paying more.

A nail is common enough that I refuse that objection.
Barrels are 3d printed. They are single use because the heat and pressure will destroy them, but they work. They also can’t get good rifling patterns so not accurate. This is why a 3D printed gun is always going to be a novelty that is useless, but it is enough to work.
All of it has parts I hate there is a lot of boring code I’ve had to work on. And sometimes the fun code is things I finish and say nobody should every do that…
