Also electric cars, gas, and steam has a bit of a format war in the 1890’s-1920’s or so, and people really did make a lot of these points back then. Unreliable and sometimes unsafe chargers (basically due to people not understanding electrical engineering as well as we do now) were a big part of why gasoline won out

I think the reason they don’t have spare parts is because the motors are less complicated and, in theory, will need fewer replacement parts. An ICE motor is like 10,000+ moving parts, an electric motor is like 300 moving parts. They’re an order of magnitude less complicated.

I used to think this way until I actually drove an EV long distance. This tech is mature and useful for road trips. Most people aren’t willing to drive 12+ hour days anyway and that’s the only real way to get a time advantage out of a gas car.

I used to work in a wine store. Customers would always joke “hahaha i just pick them by the label 😂” and I would always say. That’s not stupid, wine is about aesthetics. Someone who makes good wine will appreciate the value of a good label. And the inverse is true, people with poor taste won’t care about their label, but they won’t be able to make good wine, either.

The basic supply & demand, “invisible hand of the market” stuff applies at like. A farmer’s market. This is the context Adam Smith was talking about when he made up the invisible hand phrase. If one farmer has cheaper produce than another, he’ll probably get more customers. Anything more complicated than a local farmer’s market is… more complicated.

I think the idea that “better training = better LLM’s” is AI industry marketing hype. It’s a pretty shoddy technology on a basic level. There are applications in computer science of LLM tech, but this chatbot shit has got to stop.

I think part of that is because Uber’s version of “AI companies chasing AGI” was self-driving cars. They were pretty obviously just relying on human drivers until they could replace them with self-driving cars. When it turned out that was going to take too long, that was when they really started raising prices and lowering pay. They also had to get into delivering food, competing with Doordash etc. I think the AI companies will try to follow this model: raise prices, lower services, and pivot to an alternative market that uses similar tech. I don’t know what that would be for AI, though. Ultimately, the real difference between Uber/Airbnb and the newer AI companies is that Uber and Airbnb worked on a technical level. This AI shit does not.

Better late than never?

I’m never letting anyone get over this. When I first heard about AI I was like, “oh, it might be interesting, but since it costs more to keep on than it makes in revenue it’s economically useless, right? Right, Anakin??” I now know how I would react during the Emperor’s New Clothes. That makes me feel good. Unfortunately, I also now know how most other people would react, too (“My, your grace, what a beautiful set of clothes you have! I can’t see your balls at all!”). That makes me feel scared for the future.
