Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Thoughts on Vikunja and the tension between self-hosting, ownership, and corporate brandingEnglish
101·19 days agoThe write up is detailed, but the fact is that Vikunja does not support customization of their self-hosted platform. If you tried it, you’ll have definitely noticed. It is worthy of discussion, especially for those of us enthusiasts explicitly wanting to “own” our platform identities through self-hosting. Isn’t that exactly why we use Lemmy and self-hosting?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you manage PHP edits across application upgrades?English
1·29 days agoFor dokuwiki, I’ve found I can safely edit many menus by copying them from /inc to /conf. So far, so good. I’m tracking the edits from within dokuwiki itself, so far.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you manage PHP edits across application upgrades?English
3·29 days agoThanks for the suggestion. In this case, I’m running directly from systemctl --user space. Realizing I was directly editing the files, when I should have copied them out of their default directories to avoid them being overwritten. So, no containers in this case.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you manage PHP edits across application upgrades?English
1·29 days agoI’ve begun making numbers of small edits to wording displayed and such across many of my applications, because I find myself engaging with multiple types of people: those with accounts, those who are hyper technical, and those randomly browsing around with no account.
I’ve noticed that system defaults from developers often have no bearing on my actual users, so embracing my ability to customize to taste. :)

Linux@lemmy.ml•Modest laptop arriving, what new Linux distribution should I try?
1·29 days agoUpdate, been running Fedora 44 for just over 6 weeks. Settled into Cosmic after experimenting with LXQT and Gnome. Fought with partially implemented installer in Hannah Montana Linux, then gave MX Linux with Fluxbox a spin (but found it struggling with running multiple processes). Cosmic is quite bare, but that isn’t an issue in coming from LXQT. Performance is fantastic, even if it doesn’t “do much” beyond run a thing.
Does this mean all of my 3.x projects will no longer work?

Technology@lemmy.world•Some Mullvad VPN customers tunnel for exit after co-founder donates millions to populist partyEnglish
4·3 months agoThe move wasn’t done by Mullvad, but by the guy personally.
I’ve played with Nix twice over a week each time. I’m not afraid at all, but I suppose at this point I’ll decide which distro by dice roll.
Exactly the sort of situation I am benefiting from, thanks to receiving a spare machine.
Yeah, definitely super interested as someone who has tried neither Fedora, nor Gnome (since version 2).

Hands-free Doom Scrolling delight. All pulled live.
