eSIM is not something K have engaged with but it seems rife for issues with tying you to a device, I never thought of this issue though.

The few eSIM experiences I’ve had made it seem like nothing but a hassle. A regular SIM is just plug and play.

          If it’s hard it’s a company decision.

When I’m overseas I started using an app that can install its own esim and sell its data plan. In a couple minutes you can go from installing the app to having several GB of internet with cheap pre paid plan. Covers all continents except Antarctica.

No calls or SMS , but who uses that anyways? We’re not in the 20th century anymore.

I love taking shit apart. People should take things apart. I think a cell modem would look obvious. I don’t know. Not a suprise. These things were always over priced anyways. Glad I never bught into this crap.

Hardware wallets are overpriced? That’s an interesting take.

Honestly if someone is investing in crypto, I should hope they also invest in a hardware wallet, it’s an important precaution. You don’t need a fancy one, just a secure one.

Apparently is was a single chip. One chip isn’t obvious to most people, only people who recognize nearly or actually all the other chips. Someone discovered it by being an expert on these boards and took a look at the design and said “I don’t recognize this chip, wtf is this”

I don’t know why you would not buy from Ledger directly. Do they not ship everywhere? Does anyone know if this would work if you did not generate a seed but restored a wallet from a seed?

According to the linked article, a restored wallet is toast as well, because anything displayed by the screen can get grabbed and sent to the bad guys:

[…]they have installed an additional chip that intercepts the transmission from the Secure Element to the built-in screen and recognizes the displayed letters of the seed phrase […]Recognizing the characters alone doesn’t help the perpetrators yet, because the wallets fundamentally work offline. So the perpetrators have also installed an LTE modem, a tiny eSIM module, and a small antenna, all powered by the accumulator already built into the hardware wallet. Thus, the seed phrase is transmitted via mobile phone to the perpetrators, who thus gain control over the cryptocurrency assets secured by the seed phrase.
