As an American, who is entirely against the current administrations hostile behavior towards its allies, I’m glad that this debacle has at least spurred other nations to into separating themselves from America’s BigTech grasp. GDPR was only ever going to be a half measure as long as foreign governments continued to rely on American controlled infrastructure, and American made software and cloud services.

This is the kind of thing that should happen regardless of the temperature of diplomatic relations with the U.S.

as an American, I approve this move. I’m not happy as we lose something, but our government is not sane and needs to be treated that way. i just hope fences can be mended after the fever breaks.

I doubt it. This administration has shown the world that the US is capable of electing an administration that will do stupid shit. Even if they can trust the next administration what about the one after that?

And gently pull on the cable to slowly tow Greenland over to Europa where it belongs

The US spent decades telling Europe to trust the transatlantic relationship, then somehow managed to make a literal cable across the Arctic look like the more reliable connection. That’s an impressive achievement in diplomacy: when your allies start routing around you like a network failure.

They don’t seem to have a problem using the current ~20 cables running between Europe and the US.

Calling Trump “senile” downplays the traitorous duplicity.

At this point, he’s done so much shit that “ineptitude” no longer cuts it as a plausible explanation. Occam’s razor says he’s trying to destroy the US on purpose.

I would argue it says he’s trying to increase his own wealth at any cost. Destroying the US is a byproduct of this behavior, not the intention.

Even blatant greed isn’t enough to explain shit like randomly picking fights with Greenland and fawning over Kim Jong Un.

Dark enlightenment reads like such a fucking joke, then i remember people like Peter thiel actually believes that shit and i despair.

Its new age mysticism + im 13 and 2edgy4you culture. I can almost smell the stench of stale doritos wafting from that ideology… i have trouble really putting into words just how fucking lame that ‘movement’ is. Its like the brainchild of someone whos only read Ayn Rand & Julius Evola, i mean just how braindead can you actually be and still operate a body my god

Would this influence the latency from Japan to EU in a significant way?

Potentially, yes, but only if the cable actually reaches Japan. Greenland to Europe alone changes little. A comparable Arctic project, Far North Fiber, targets 142 ms round trip from Tokyo to London, over 50 ms faster than existing routes.
