How do Brave Bypasses NYT’s paywall? In the past I’ve managed that with an extension, not anymore .
you can use archivetoday and it will archive it and load it without the paywall iirc. though I haven’t been able to do that in a while since they have the Google QR captcha now.
I wonder how the Washington Post feels about it?
If the allegations are true, Brave has found a remarkably efficient business model: block the publisher’s ads, bypass its paywall, scrape its articles, then sell the results to AI companies. All while marketing itself as the browser that protects people from shady internet practices.
Brave’s always been shady.
I don’t get why it is listed in the Arch Linux wiki.
Sounds about right, given that its previous business model was MITMing ads in order to extort website owners to buy its crypto.
They also own their own ad company.
The media is always lying to some extent. This is just karma
Edit: Karma for the news outlets that lie. There’s a browser that can get around all their bullshit now and it’s great
The article lack details on how that scraping is done, and I think those details are crucial to evaluate how serious are the allegations.
And people over in Reddit and tech-illiterate people recommend this garbage?
Always have. Did you know blatantly lying to idiots will get those idiots to repeat those lies? It’s true!
Sure. Let media outlets owned by the rich fight tech companies owned by other rich people. Doubt it changes anything though.
What browser do y’all (who hopefully are more informed than me) recommend? I’ve switched from Chrome to Firefox and now to Brave…
Waterfox
I use Librewolf primarily because of vimium-c and ublock, but it’s not my preference. I use it mainly for corporate attention-economy sites.
My all-time favorite and primary is vimb. Since migrating to webkitgtk-6.0, it works quite well. Every instance is bubblewrapped, but if anonymity is your goal, you’d want to make sure it’s carefully configured. You are probably aware, but browserleaks.com is a nice site for privacy testing.
Firefox is still perfectly fine.
Librewolf on desktop, Ironfox on mobile
LIbrewolf is my personal choice along with mulvad browser but I don’t use chromium browsers
So when google, meta and amazon do it it’s cool, but when a good campany does it it’s bad
Brave is not a “good” company.
They’re better than any other company that makes a browser
They have excellent PR and marketing. People think they’re better than they actually are.
They’re an ad company
Except they don’t make a browser. They just repackage chromium with some very dubious modifications. Not to mention the bullshit with stealing ad click revenue, and didn’t they have a fucking crypto miner bundled in at one point?
They’re absolute crap.
Wait are saying that a fork isn’t a real app but just a repackage of another? Is something like Ubuntu not an os but simply a repackaged debian? Even if you dislike brave as a company the browser itself changes more then enough things to be consider different from stock chromium
Calling anything chromium base a fork feels disingenuous. It’s a little more than a skin and a built-in add-ons suite.
I literally did not say any of that.
" Except they don’t make a browser. They just repackage chromium" What am I missing then?
Are you illiterate?
I never came anywhere close to making the claims you accuse me of. So, frankly, you’re missing some manners. Considering your response to not liking my statement was to immediately put words in my mouth. That is rather rude.
“Dubious” modifications? You mean the stuff they add to block ads and spoof fingerprinting that works better with just one setting change than any other browser I’ve ever used or tested on such things?
Edit: or maybe it’s the completely anonymous sync they have that doesn’t even ask for an email address, or maybe it’s their continued support for manifest v2 for anyone who wants to double up on adblocking with ublock origin. Or the way they continue to bypass youtube’s adblock detection
Mozilla would like a word…
Mozilla isn’t saint, but at least they actually make a browser.
Just because an organization ostensibly respects individual autonomy does NOT mean that they are a “good” actor. Just as not all corporations, or departments within said corporation, are “bad”.
I’m not saying you are right or wrong about brave, but if your threat model is informed by heresay and group-selection-rooted associations, you run a high risk of getting got. Stay vigilant out there and be wary of in/out group messaging.
